Benefits of Martial Arts Training – Post Shelter In Place
03 Jul 2020
Life has been very different for the past three months.
Children have been home from school, with parents trying to get them through the last part of their school year. Which means everyone learning the curriculum as well as the software!
Many people have been working from home.
We have gone through toilet paper shortages, long lines at the grocery stores, wearing masks (or debating whether one should or not).
People have gotten sick and died from this pandemic, there are heroes on the front line caring for them; as well as all of the essential workers who did what they could to keep as much of our life as normal as possible.
Now that restrictions have been somewhat lifted, the thought of going out again leaves us feeling elated and scared simultaneously, or intermittently. So where does that leave us? Where do we go from here? And how does martial arts training help any of this?
I’m glad you asked!
For the youngsters (children and teenagers): They were stuck at home. Even the playgrounds and skate parks were closed! Some got to go on walks or bike rides with their families, others played in their yards, but there wasn’t an organized sport, a team, a leader, or a teacher for the most part. Others played video games and watched a lot of TV. Martial arts training gives them a place to kick and punch and yell, and blow off steam! They learn patterns and work on memorization skills. They strengthen their focus, upper and lower body coordination, balance, and control of their bodies (how is that front kick foot position again?) They learn or reinforce respecting themselves as well as others, speaking and asking questions at the appropriate time, and they gain confidence! All of these things will help them when they can return to school.
For adults: Martial arts training is a great way to get your cardio workout. Trust me! Go through some forms, and drills and your heart will be pumping and you will be sweating! I got to do a lot of training over the last three months. It was great! You get to work your core, arms, legs, and glutes with all the punching and kicking – the long lean kind of muscle development. And equally as important, you get to stretch and become more flexible.
Tae Kwon Do specializes in high kicks, so stretching is very important. Flexibility and strength are gained even in the stances we do. And do you want to talk about stress relief?
The younger set is not the only one who gets to punch, kick, and yell. Honestly, it feels great! I think we could all use this kind of therapy about now! And adults get all of the benefits listed in the paragraph above as well.
One of the great things about martial art training is that it can be done year ‘round. When it’s hot outside, it’s cool in the studio.
When it’s cold and raining outside, it’s warm and dry in the studio!
