UNITY IS STRENGTH… WHEN THERE IS TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION, WONDERFUL THINGS CAN BE ACHIEVED.” – MATTIE STEPANEK –

WHAT IS TEAMWORK?

Teamwork is working together to achieve a GOAL. For teamwork to be effective, all members of the team need to do their parts and be RESPECTFUL. When a team comes together, great things can happen. In our class we use teamwork to help each other get better at new skills. If you play sports you use teamwork to win a game. When you work together as a team there really is no limit on what you can ACHIEVE. It is very important to learn and understand how to be a team player.

Ask Your Students:

  1. Why is it important to understand teamwork?
  2. What kind of team player are you?
  3. How do you use teamwork in our class?

TEAMWORK WILL TAKE YOU FAR.

Talent is a very important thing, but when it comes to team sports, it is not enough to take you all the way. Along with your talent, you must depend on your teammates. It is when you work together with them that you will achieve the most. Talk to your teammates. Come up with a plan to play your best and win the game. If you play basketball, don’t be a ball hog. If you if you play football, always pass to the open person. In our class, be a team player by helping those struggling to learn a new technique.

Ask Your Students:

  1. How are you a team player in the sports you play?
  2. How does teamwork help you win championships?
  3. Why must you depend on your teammates

“ALONE WE CAN DO SO LITTLE, TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH.” – HELEN KELLER –

TRYING TO TAKE ON EVERYTHING YOURSELF ISN’T ALWAYS THE BEST OPTION.

When we try to take on too much, we sometimes end up getting nothing done. We have to learn to count on our teammates to help us. For example, if we have a group project and try to do it all ourselves, it will end up taking twice as long than if we had asked our teammates for help. If we play a sport and don’t include our teammates, we won’t score as much and could end up losing. When we work together as a team, we ACCOMPLISH more and have a better chance at completing a project or winning a game.

Ask Your Students:

  1. Why is so important to work together?
  2. Why must we include our teammates?
  3. What are some consequences of not being a team player?
  4. Have you ever had somebody on your team not include you? How did it make you feel?

“THE STRENGTH OF THE TEAM IS EACH INDIVIDUAL MEMBER. THE STRENGTH OF EACH MEMBER IS THE TEAM.” – PHIL JACKSON –

SOMETIMES IT CAN BE HARD TO BE A TEAM PLAYER.

It is not always easy to work as a team. Sometimes we will not see eye-to-eye on things with other team members. When we are a good team player, we realize things are not always about us but about the group. For example, if we play basketball the goal is not to see how many points we can score on our own, but rather to see how well the team can do together to get a win. If we are working on a school project, it is not about doing things our way but rather doing what will get the project done best. When we work together and do what is best for the team, we will always get a better outcome.

Ask Your Students:

  1. Have you ever had to make a choice that was best for the team but maybe not best for you?
  2. Why is it important to see the big picture when working as a team?
  3. Why will you have a better outcome when you work together as a team?
  4. Why do we have to do what is best for the team even if it is not best for us personally?

TEAMWORK

This month we are learning about teamwork and why it is so important to be a team player. Teamwork is a big part of our class. We count on our students to help each other and work together. Whether it is through sparring, group exercises or just discussing new techniques, it is crucial for our students to help each other out. Students should know what teamwork is, how teamwork will benefit them, and how to be a team player even when it is hard to do.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Teach respect. Being a team player means respecting those around you. Start teaching this to your kids when they are young so it becomes a learned behavior.

Model the right behavior. Your kids will learn from example. Teach them to value their teammates and never badmouth them and to work together.

There is no “I” in team. Teach your kids to do what is best for the team, even if it is not always what is best for them personally. Help them see the big picture and a successful outcome for the team as a whole.

Teach your kids to take responsibility for their actions and ownership of their mistakes. When something goes wrong, it’s easy to point the finger at somebody else, but part of being a team player is accepting your mistakes and learning from them to better your team.

Encouraging others is a big part of being a good team player. Teach your kids to cheer on their teammates and praise them for a job well done.
