May 2017 – Word of the Month
01 May 2017
This month we will highlight one of the intrinsic values gained through martial arts training – and that is CHARACTER. At Ajay’s Karate – we do more than teach kicks and punches; we teach traditional TAEKWONDO with real LIFE SKILLS!
“KNOWLEDGE WILL GIVE YOU POWER, BUT CHARACTER RESPECT.” – BRUCE LEE
This month we are learning about
character. Having a good character
is essential to earning your black belt
and living your life in a positive manner.
Building good character with positive
qualities is important to the growth of
every child. Parents need to help their
children develop strong character traits
while maintaining a fit and healthy body.
You want your children to have honesty,
dignity, courtesy, humility, tenacity,
respect, discipline, focus and so much
more as they continue to grow and learn
to become productive teenagers, adults
and black belts.
YOUR CHARACTER IS COMPOSED OF MANY DIFFERENT QUALITIES. YOUR CHARACTER IS A MAJOR DETERMINING FACTOR TO YOUR SUCCESS IN LIFE.
We each have certain qualities of our character which are good and certain qualities which need improvement. To be successful in school, at home and in martial arts, it is important to cultivate our good qualities such as being honest, being respectful, being easygoing, being confident, being disciplined and taking pride in yourself. If you feel weak in any of these qualities, there is always room to improve and work on that trait. We should continually work to lessen our bad qualities such as being lazy, being pessimistic, being dishonest, being self-centered, being arrogant and being mean. In martial arts, the negative qualities can keep you from becoming the black belt you are striving to be.
HAVING A POSITIVE OUTLOOK AND GOOD ATTITUDE ARE PART OF STRONG CHARACTER.
Having a positive attitude, especially when things are difficult or don’t go your way, is crucial to being able to work through the tough times. Here are a few ways to help you cultivate a positive attitude: • Always look for the good. Be someone who always looks for the positive aspects of any situation. • Don’t exaggerate. If you constantly blow things out of proportion, then everything seems like a big deal when in fact, it may not be. • Be honest. Always represent yourself honestly. Don’t over-inflate your accomplishments. Also, be honest about situations. If they’re tough, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
When most people start in martial arts, their ultimate goal is to become a black belt in the art they are practicing and studying. There are many qualities that someone needs to have in order to become the best black belt they can be, but there are a few that stick out as some of the most important. These qualities are often cultivated and grown during the journey and become a strong part of your character through their constant practice. • Humility. Humility is really important throughout your entire life but also once you become a black belt. You do not want people to think you are a jerk or have a big ego because of the title and/or belt you have earned. Humility simply means having a correct view of yourself. Don’t pretend to be less than you are, and don’t pretend to be more than you are.
- Courtesy. You always want to treat others how you want to be treated. You want to put the welfare of others ahead of yourself and to be kind. • Perseverance. This might be one of the most important qualities to have as a black belt. You never want to give up. If you are practicing and studying to become a black belt, push through any obstacles to reach that goal. You should practice this in all things you do including school, work, friendships and family life.
